Crystal City Hotel

4 Achileos Street, Athens, Greece

Our hotel was just the best. It was conveniently located close to the metro station. It was clean. Everything worked. The restaurant was excellent overall. The staff was friendly and took very good care of us.

The room was clean. Maid service cleaned the room and made the beds each day. There was always fresh clean towels, soap, toilet paper, shampoo available in the room. The maids were polite, friendly, and always ready to help.

Breakfast was included in the daily room charge. The free breakfast was top of the line. Everything was fresh and there was all you wanted to eat. Just before 10AM when the free breakfast closed a waiter visited each table to quietly inform us so that we could pick a few fruits to take with or have that last cup of coffee.

Wireless internet was available. The first few days we had a strong internet signal in our room  but on Monday morning it disappeared. Then I had to go to the lobby for internet. That turned out to be fun. A small bar and dessert counter adjoins the lobby. I ordered a beer with frosted glass to drink while I tended to my internet needs.

When you select your hotel be sure to ask how far it is from the closest metro station. The main stations are Omonia, Syntagma, and Monastriaki. Monastriaki is the closet to the Acropolis.

Room with a View

We had a room with a view. Room 506 had a small balcony that overlooked the main street called Achileos. Looking directly across the street we saw another high rise apartment building that obscured half the skyline. The Acropolis and the Parthenon could be seen on the mountain in the distance. At night the Acropolis is lighted to add another dimension to the view.

We could walk from the hotel to the base of the Acropolis in as little as 30 minutes. We always took our time to visit the many shops along the way. Actually Daniela visited the shops and I enjoyed being with her.

We shopped, stopped to have a coffee, and ate at some of the sidewalk cafes along the way.

Athenas Street, the way to the Acropolis

Our destination for the day, the Acropolis, as seen from our hotel. At night the Acropolis and Parthenon are lighted. It is an impressive sight.

We started each day enjoying the free breakfast at our hotel. From the hotel we walked up Achilieos street about 200 meters to Karaiskaki square. At the square we changed to Konstantanoy street to finish the 15 minute walk to Omonia station. At the square Omonia we turned right on Athenas street.

Another 15 minute walk on Athenas and we are at Ermous street which is the old part of Athens. We walk left on Ermous street talking and enjoying the shops on the way. In the distance can be seen the Russian church.

Our walk takes us to Plaka the oldest part of Athens. Plaka is at the base of the Acropolis. It has old houses, narrow streets, and stone steps that meander around the still inhabited old homes.
